Kevin Frey | Journalist

About Kevin …

Kevin Frey brings with him 9 yrs of experience as a TV journalist – most of that time spent covering politics at both the national and state levels. He is a utility player, comfortable scooping stories that drive the news cycle forward, assembling in-depth series, and ad libbing on air during breaking news. He can shoot, edit, and write for both TV and the web.

As the Washington correspondent for NY1 and Spectrum News, his primary beat is D.C. stories with a New York angle – that includes keeping tabs on NY’s influential and dynamic congressional delegation. His scoops and lawmaker interviews have been cited by The New York TimesThe Washington Post, Politico’s newsletters, Semafor, The Daily Beast, the NY Post, Fox News, MSNBC, the Guardian, Vice, and other outlets. He has appeared as a panelist on CNN, MSNBC, and C-SPAN to share his reporting.

He regularly interviews White House officials, and traveled to Europe to report on President Biden’s meeting with the Pope and the COP26 climate summit in Scotland. He closely covered the George Santos saga, has reported on Trump’s indictments, and was live on the air during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He also produced two in-depth series profiling key congressional leaders: Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Elise Stefanik.

Kevin previously covered Capitol Hill for Spectrum’s stations in North Carolina. Before that, he covered Louisiana state politics for WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge. While there, he reported on the state’s multi-year budget crisis and was the only TV reporter to accompany the governor to Cuba to cover an economic development trip.

When he is not roaming the halls of Congress, you’ll find Kevin singing with a local choir or checking out the latest performances at the Kennedy Center.

Born and raised in Lancaster, Pa., Kevin’s first got his feet wet in the journalism field during an internship with WGAL-TV, the NBC affiliate in his hometown. He also interned with ABC News, Cox Media Group’s DC bureau, and PBS Washington Week. Kevin graduated summa cum laude from The George Washington University with a degree in journalism and mass communication. He minored in music.
